It's hard to fault desert high school girls' volleyball players if they felt a little left out last year. The CIF-SS did an impressive job, shortening and moving and altering the schedule, to allow as many sports as possible to have some semblance of a season during a condensed athletic calendar last spring because of the coronavirus. The one sport that fell through the cracks was girls' volleyball. In the school year, girls' volleyball was the only one of the 22 sports played by desert high schools that did not see any competition. They got to have somewhat of a season, and it looked like they were having a lot of fun. That was the unfortunate reality for all desert volleyball teams last year, as they were victims of bad timing and being an indoor sport. Volleyball is typically played in the fall, but there were no sports seasons held in the fall or winter. Instead, every sport was moved into either Season 1 which ran from mid-March into April, or Season 2, which ran from April into June. Volleyball was one of seven sports in Season 1 but was the only one played indoors. While outdoor sports and conditioning were allowed to start, the protocols were more strict for indoor sports. By the time indoor sports in Riverside County were allowed, there was only two weeks left in Season 1. At that point, trying to put together a season or a game was deemed illogical. Desert volleyball players got to do strength and conditioning together outdoors, but never got to play a game. I mean we'll never take for granted another season or another game or even another practice. The sport of boys' volleyball which was paired with girls' volleyball as a Season 1 sport was moved by the CIF-SS to Season 2 so it would have a better chance of getting played.
